Mayor's Message: Rodeo Arena Improvements

2024 Rodeo Committee

The February newsletter will help you plan your 2024! We are looking forward to events, recreation, plays, art shows, emergency planning classes, garden events, council and commission meetings, and our annual City Celebration, Old West Days! It is my hope that you will keep this newsletter for reference throughout the year.

One of my favorite events of the year is the Bluffdale City Rodeo. This event has drawn participants and spectators from all around the region and outside the state every year. The rodeo is a tradition I want to carry on for many years to come. Almost 20 years ago, the city had an equestrian arena in the Jordan Narrows area. The Council wanted this arena to be more centrally located and available as a community arena, so it was moved to the current location as part of the main City Park.  Along with the arena came old wooden bleachers that were already old and needed repair. So many volunteer hours have been spent over the years repairing and repainting these bleachers for events. The Council has long been concerned about the safety and the accessibility of seating for events and have hoped to make improvements and enhance the arena area of the park. After years of planning and looking for funding, I am thrilled to announce that we have been awarded grant money to finally make improvements and enhance the area around the arena!

The Salt Lake County TRCC (Tourism, Recreation, Culture and Convention) Advisory Board forwarded a recommendation to Salt Lake County Council to award $2,766,960 for the Bluffdale Equestrian Park improvements. SLCO Council unanimously approved the budget in December, including the recommendations from the TRCC Advisory Board.

There are many improvements that are needed for the arena area and these improvements may have to be completed in phases. This funding is a great start to updating the following:

  • All Spectator seating will be located on the west side.
  • Safer bleacher system with stairs, rails, and other safety features.
  • ADA-accessible seating with companion seats.
  • Established asphalt parking lot with ADA parking stalls.
  • Concrete plaza for safe entrances and ADA access to bleachers.
  • Utility and lighting upgrades.
  • Separate and enhance the perimeter trails within the arena facility.
  • Safer access and management for events.
  • Permanent combined restroom, ticketing, and concession building.

Construction on the arena area will begin in early spring 2024. The unofficial use of the arena area for dropping off or picking up students attending Bluffdale Elementary near the school will be eliminated. Plans are being made to keep the existing trail on the south side of the arena for walking to the school, but cars will not be allowed in the arena area and will need to use the parking areas within the city park to utilize the trail system. Every effort will be made to keep the use of the arena open as much as possible during the construction, but we appreciate your patience and consideration during construction times. We will do our best to communicate with our clubs and residents when the area will be unavailable during the construction process.

This is a huge project with a lot of new elements (including new utilities), and we will not have the improvements finished by July or August for our Rodeo or Old West Days. I have met with the Bluffdale Rodeo Committee to look at our options for 2024. The rodeo committee has recommended that we postpone the rodeo and other arena events until the facilities are completed. I agree with their suggestion. Please reach out to me at to volunteer for our 2024 events. We will need everyone’s help. Let’s work together to make this a wonderful year!
