Before the first snow hit, we had a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Bluffdale Public Works Complex. With the growth in our city, our needs continue to expand.
The current building, where the Public Works department is located, was built in the 1970s. It has not been updated to meet current building codes, the utilities are outdated, and there are concerns regarding earthquake sustainability. The building is on a small piece of land that does not house all our equipment.
Some of the larger problems we are facing with our current Public Works building is that we cannot wash or maintain our equipment on site. The storm drains are too old so we must drive our vehicles to other cities for the washing, emptying, and maintenance. This becomes very difficult in the winter when we are constantly plowing and salting the roads.
Because there is no room on the property for all of our equipment and vehicles, they are stored outside. They need to be constantly repaired due to deterioration and have been exposed to theft and vandalism. Another safety concern is the location of the current building on Redwood Road next to the cemetery. The area has become very difficult to enter and exit due to the heavy amounts of traffic, making it high-risk for our employees and assets.
After 10 years of looking at land, making offers, and searching for a solution, we have moved forward with land located on 13800 South and 3600 West next to Bangerter Highway on the Riverton border. This area is about 7 acres with room to house a building and our equipment.
Many have asked how this is to be paid for. Remember that 100% of your property taxes go to the Fire and Police Protection Fund to pay for public safety. Your property taxes will not pay for the public works building. More than half of the building is paid for with money from the Water Operations Fund. The rest of the money comes from sales tax and other funding.
We are thrilled to have this project underway. We hope to have it completed within 18 months. Please reach out with any questions email@example.com as we work together to find solutions to our growing city.
